A 2024 Huskie Look Ahead

Coming up at the U of S campus…

Many Huskie athletes are now focusing on family, academics and training before returning to competition in 2024.

The U-Prairie Challenge, the annual athletics competition between the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina, resumes on Friday, January 5^th when the Huskie women’s hockey team hosts the Regina Cougars at 7pm at Merlis Belsher Place. With 12 regular season games remaining, the Huskies sit in fourth place in the Canada West standings with 22 points. The second game of the series is on Sunday January 7^th at 3pm at the Brandt Centre in Regina…the first game of a Huskie/Cougar hockey double-header.

The second game is at 6pm (on January 7^th) at the Brandt Centre, featuring the U of S men’s hockey team against the Cougars. Saskatchewan is in fifth place with 22 points, four back of Mount Royal and Alberta. The first game of the Regina/Huskie men’s series is at 5pm on Friday January 6^th at Merlis Belsher Place.

The U of S men’s volleyball team, coached by Sean McKay, had a terrific first half of the season. The Huskies are in a first-place tie with Alberta at 9 and 3 in the standings. Outside hitters Emmett Graham and Isiah Mamer have combined for close to 300 kills and are both averaging over 3 points per set. The Bears visit the PAC on January 5^th at 7:30 pm and January 6^th at 4:30 pm.

Prior to that, the Huskie women’s volleyball team will face the Pandas at 6:00 and 3:00 on January 5^th and 6^th. Saskatchewan sits with a 5 and 7 record on the season.

The Huskie basketball teams return to the PAC on January 12^th and 13^th. The men’s team will face UBC Okanagan at 6:00 pm on Friday (12^th) and 5:00 pm on Saturday (13^th). The men’s team went 6 and 4 in the first half of the 2023-24 season. First year forward, Easton Thimm from Holy Cross high school, has the third best shooting percentage in the conference at 54.4%. Fifth year guard, Alex Dewar, is averaging over 14 points per game.

Saskatchewan’s undefeated women’s basketball team will face UBCO at 8:00 pm on the 12^th and 7:00 pm on the 13^th at the PAC. The 10 and 0 Huskies are one of two unbeaten teams in the Canada West conference. Trinity Western is 8 and 0.

The Track and Field season also starts on the January 12^th and 13^th weekend as the Huskies host the Sanderson Classic at the Field House.
