Visiting the Pandas in Alberta Capital

Jan 25, 2024 | 2:24 PM

The Huskie women’s hockey team bus heads west for a January 26th-27th series that has huge implications. Saskatchewan visits the Pandas in Edmonton on Friday night at 8:00 pm and Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm. The Huskies are in fourth place in the Canada West standings, two points back of Mount Royal and four points behind second place Alberta.

The U of S earned three of a possible four points against the Pandas earlier this season with a 2-0 win and a 2-1 overtime loss back in November at Merlis Belsher Place. The Huskies enter the series on a six-game win streak, while Alberta has won 11 straight games.

Both teams enjoy some of the best goaltending in Canada West women’s hockey. Panda goalie Halle Oswald and Camryn Drever of the Huskies lead the conference with goals against averages of 1.19. Drever, who has played in the bulk of the games this season, made 18 saves in a 2-0 shutout win over the MacEwan Griffins on January 19th, while Colby Wilson stopped 20 Griffin shots in a 2-1 victory on January 20th at Merlis Belsher Place. For Wilson it was her third win in six appearances this season.

“You want to go with the hot hand, but we’ve been in situations where a goaltender hasn’t played in 7, 8, 9 games. You’ve got to find ways to put goalies in, in meaningful situations. Colby has played well the last couple of times that she was in. It’s comforting for Cam to know and it’s comforting for the team to know.”

3rd year Panda, Natalie Kieser, has a 3-game goal scoring streak on the go and leads Alberta in scoring with 22 points in 20 games. Huskie head coach Steve Kook was asked to describe Alberta’s style of play. “They have super tight structure. They’re comfortable playing one goal games. They’re quick and are really good in the transition game.”

Kook’s team matches up nicely against the Pandas. “They’re not as big as we are”, he said. “Finally, we get to say that we are playing a team that is smaller than us.” Saskatchewan 3rd year forward. Mallory Dyer. put together a 3-game goal scoring streak from January 12th to 19th, while Sophie Lalor leads the Huskies with 18 points in 22 games.

Kook chatted with HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison on the Coach’s Show.
