A pair of Huskies continue hockey career in Sweden

Two long time Huskie hockey teammates will continue to play together after finishing up their respective U SPORTS careers in the spring of 2024. Goaltender Camryn Drever and defender Isabella Pozzi have signed one-year deals with Skellefteå AIK of the Swedish Hockey League.

Drever will go down as one of the best goalies in U of S women’s hockey history, putting up 39 wins in her five-season university career with a 1.47 goals against average. The Edmonton product set a program record with 15 wins, including five shutouts, in the 2023-24 season and was named the Canada West Player and Goaltender of the Year and a U SPORTS second team All-Canadian.

The opportunity to play pro hockey in Sweden came about thanks to her agent Lander Cook of LDC Talent. Drever said she felt an immediate comfort level after meeting with her new club. “It was in early December. I felt connected to this team. The General Manager was super-nice, it all happened really fast.”

When asked about how Huskie Athletics and the U of S women’s program have prepared her for this moment, Drever said, “The overall development and opportunities that I’ve been given (at the University of Saskatchewan) have allowed me to grow. I owe so much to them, especially Sheldon (Goetzen, Huskie goalie coach) and my goalie crew.

Pozzi, from Calgary, had 36 points in over 150 games as a Huskie and, like Drever, competed in a pair of U SPORTS women’s hockey championships, earning a bonze medal in 2022. Pozzi was also named to the 2022 U SPORTS all-star team and in 2023 was the alternate captain and Drever’s teammate for Canada’s gold medal team at the FISU Games.

When asked about Huskie head coach Steve Kook and the U of S program’s career contributions, Pozzi answered, “They have had a major role in my development both as a player and person. My teammates pushing me to be better have helped over my last six years.”

As for playing together, Drever said, “It’s awesome. Me and Izzy have grown closer. It’s a special opportunity.” Pozzi echoed those comments. “We had a great six years together”, she said. “I’m really excited for us to go and play in another country. It’s nice that I know someone that is going as well.”

SkellefteåAIK was recently promoted to the Swedish Women’s Hockey League (Svenska damhockeyligan or SDHL) after having previously competed in the NDHL (Nationella Damhockeyligan). The team defeated AIK in two games in March to earn the promotion to the highest level of women’s hockey in Sweden. (Source: Elliot Gabler-Huskie Athletics)
