Huskie men’s basketball team looks to a new group of leaders

Huskie men’s basketball coach Jamie Campbell is looking forward to seeing which of his younger players emerge as the 2024-25 Canada West basketball season approaches. Veterans such as Alex Dewar and Chan De Ciman have graduated from the program and now, new leaders must come to the forefront.

“We are waiting to see what Easton Thimm, the Canada West rookie of the year and an all-rookie team member in the country, can do”, said Campbell. Thimm, a 6’9” forward from Holy Cross, was second in team scoring last season. “It’ll be interesting to see him build on that. It’s always tougher in that second year. He works hard, he’s committed, and he wants to get better.

Campbell is also looking forward to seeing guard Emanuel Bonsu take another step in his Huskie career. The 6’2” guard from St. Laurent, Quebec, who joined the Huskies last season, is preparing for his fourth season of U SPORTS eligibility. “He really came on at the end of the season”, said Campbell who has described Bonsu as a high-end defender. “We are really excited about him coming back.”

The third-year Huskie head coach is still in the throws of recruitment for the 2024-25 season but is excited about local products Dillyn Morin from Walter Murray and Aden Bowman graduate, Owen Murphy-Wiebe, joining the program. Murphy-Wiebe’s sister is on the Huskie women’s basketball team while his dad is a former Huskie as well.

There will be a noticeable change to Canada West women’s and men’s basketball this season as the 17 teams will be divided into Prairie and B.C. divisions. Saskatchewan opens the season on November 1^st and 2^nd in Calgary before hosting the Manitoba Bisons on November 8^th and 9^th at the PAC.

The U of S basketball teams have just one regular season match-up against a BC opponent on the November 29^th-30^th weekend in Kamloops against the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.

The Huskie men’s team finished with an 11 and 9 record last season and have a challenging 2024-25 schedule out of the gate. Calgary was 15-5, Manitoba was 13-7 and Alberta finished with a 14-6 record. “It’s going to be a whole lot right away”, said Campbell. “We’ve got to get battle tested quick.”
