Huskies host Bears on Thursday in non-conference contest

The Huskie football team will take on the Alberta Golden Bears in Canada West pre-season play on Thursday night in Saskatoon. After claiming Hardy Cup titles and Vanier Cup appearances in 2021 and 2022, Saskatchewan looks to regain championship form after losing to the Bears, 40-17, in the 2023 Canada West semi-finals last November.

Lloydminster product, Anton Amundrud, is preparing for his second season as starting quarterback after leading the U of S to a 5 and 3 finish last year. Head coach Scott Flory is looking forward to seeing Amundrud’s progress. “This whole camp he’s been really good”, he said. “That’s practice. We want to see him take a big step this year.”

The Huskies have a wealth of experience on both sides of the ball. Running back Ryker Frank, who had a pair of 100-yard rushing games last season, returns for his 4th season of eligibility. Daniel Wiebe and Branson Pipko return to a veteran receiving group. Defensively the Huskies did lose end George Idoko and linebacker Nick Wiebe to the CFL, however returnees Reece McCormick and Chaz Walker have the experience to generate pressure up front. Saskatchewan also has several veterans at linebacker and in the secondary.

When discussing last year’s playoff exit Flory said, “We got ahead of our skis a little bit. We’ve got to look inward before we start projecting.” With lots of veterans, led by a six- player leadership group, the head coach is happy with his team’s mental approach to the season. “From a team aspect, the care, the love, the dedication to this program, this is as good of a team that I’ve been around.”

Flory expects the starters from both teams to play for most of the first half with newcomers getting on to the field later in the game. Thursday’s kick-off is at 7:00 at Griffiths Stadium.

HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison caught up with Flory to talk about the exhibition game and the season ahead.
