A trip to the west coast didn’t go according to plan for the Huskie football team as the UBC Thunderbirds beat the U of S 38-24 on Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium. Over 9,000 fans (mostly UBC supporters) witnessed an incredible effort from running back Isiah Knight. The 4th-year running back from Ottawa had 189 yards and two touchdowns.

Four minutes into the game, Knight capped off an impressive 80 play drive with a 13-yard touchdown run to bring the crowd to its feet. After two Huskie field goals, Saskatchewan showed some big play capability of their own as quarterback Anton Amundrud hit 4th-year receiver Daniel Wiebe for an 87 yards score and the Huskies jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the second quarter.

Before the end of the half, the Thunderbirds regained the lead as back-up quarterback Derek Engel and running back Dane Kapler scored on short runs and the home side was up 21-14. UBC did not give up the lead after that.

The T-Birds put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies 17-0. Knight added to an impressive night with a 59-yard run for a score while Kapler scored on a four-yard major. UBC lead 38-17 going into the fourth quarter. Saskatchewan’s offense could not seem to move the ball against UBC’s defense which finished the night with 2 interceptions and one quarterback sack.

Amundrud, who finished the night with 329 yards in passing and two touchdowns, hit Wiebe on a three-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Wiebe had 9 catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns. The Huskies had just 105 yards in rushing, as feature tailback Ryker Frank was held to 27 yards on the ground after a 224-yard performance in week 3 against Calgary.

The Thunderbirds move to 2 and 2 on the season while the Huskies fall to 1 and 3. Alberta and Regina are both 2 and 2 after the Bears beat the Rams 30-6 on Friday night.

The Huskies host the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday September 27th at Griffiths Stadium. Coverage on the HuskieFAN app, powered by Holiday Inn Express University, starts at 6:45 with the Saskatoon Minor Football Pre-Game Show. Advantage Collision Huskie Football starts at 7:00 PM.
