Huskie kicker Lukas Scott capped off a 19-point fourth quarter with a 47-yard field goal in the final minute as the U of S Huskies defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 33-30 on Friday night at Griffiths Stadium. When asked if he felt any pressure, the first-year kicker said “You try not think about it. I hit those kicks in practice. It’s something I do every day.”

Head coach Scott Flory says Scott is showing more composure now than earlier in the season. Scott, who played high school football at Holy Cross, only attempted one field goal in the first two games of his Canada West career but is now 8 for 10 in the last three Huskie games. “Coming into this year, he came in a bit big eyed, but he’s settled in”, said Flory. “You can see he’s got some confidence.” Scott credits kicking coach Braden Suchan for some of his success. “He is doing a great job to help me calm down in games”, he said.

Saskatchewan’s character was tested a few times in the football game. The Huskies had a 14-5 first half lead before Alberta put up 25 straight points. Bears receiver Erik Torhjelm caught a pair of second quarter touchdown passes from quarterback Eli Hetlinger and the Bears jumped out to a 20-14 halftime lead. The Golden Bears then widened the lead early in the fourth quarter when Hetlinger connected with Cody Peever for a major and it was 29-14.

Huskie starting quarterback Anton Amundrud, who came out for a few plays in the second half, dialed it up in the fourth quarter. The Lloydminster product led Saskatchewan to a 4 play 75-yard drive which ended in a Ryker Frank 7-yard touchdown run and Alberta’s lead was cut to 30-20. “When you have high level quarterback play, it corrects a lot of mistakes”, said Flory. (Amundrud) kept fighting. He made plays and the guys believe in him.”

The Huskie defense held the Bears at bay for back-to-back drives enabling the offense to strike again. Ercy Avul caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Amundrud and it was 30-27. Then, with 2:47 remaining ,Scott hit a 21-yard field goal with less than three minutes left to tie the game at 30. After more stingy defense, the Huskies put Scott in to field goal range for the game winning kick.

Amundrud had 235 yards in passing with one touchdown toss. Frank finished the night with 185 yards in rushing and two scores. Defensively, cornerback Katley Joseph finished with 5 and a half tackles and was solid in coverage, while rookie linebacker Jacob Goldstone had 3 tackles.

The Huskies improved to 2 and 3 with the win and will host the Manitoba Bisons on Friday, October 4^th at 7:00 PM at Griffiths Stadium.
