Huskies edge Rams

A tight 2-point win

Oct 19, 2024 | 6:13 PM

One of the oldest sayings in sports applies to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies; “a win is a win.” The Huskies pulled out a 22-20 victory over the Regina Rams at Griffiths Stadium on Saturday afternoon. A team, known for putting up points, scored just one touchdown in the first half and one in the second half on their way to victory. Saskatchewan scored the first touchdown of the game in the opening quarter when running back Ryker Frank capped off a 94-yard drive with a one-year run. Frank set a school record with his 21st career touchdown.

The Huskies didn’t score a second quarter point allowing Regina to climb back into the football game. Ram kicker Isaac Wegner kicked a pair of 28-yard field goals to help give Regina a 10-8 lead at the break.

With the score 14-12 in the fourth quarter, the Huskies put up 10 straight points. After a Lukas Scott field goal, receiver Daniel Wiebe hauled in a 22-yard pass from U of S quarterback Anton Amundrud, capping off a 6-play 65-yard drive. Trailing 22-12, the Rams found the end-zone for the first time with 2:12 remaining as Noah Pelletier tossed a touchdown pass to Emmett Steadman. The Huskies were able to run out the clock with their final possession of the contest.

Regina’s defense had two interceptions but could not capitalize. Amundrud had 278 yards in passing, while Pelletier threw for 235 yards for the Rams with one interception to Huskie defensive back Aidan Sommacal. Veteran Saskatchewan linebacker, Seth Hundeby, had a sack.

Prior to the game the Huskies recognized the players who suited up for the final home game at Griffiths Stadium, including Katley Joseph, John Kourtis, Jayson Kehler and Jesse Kuntz.

With the win the Huskies moved to 4 and 3 on the season. Saskatchewan can finish no higher than third in the Canada West standings as Manitoba pulled out a 38-37 overtime win over Alberta to move to 6 and 1 in Canada West play with one week to go. UBC sits at 5 and 2 after a 21-5 win over Calgary on Friday night. (The Thunderbirds hold the tiebreaker over Saskatchewan.)

The Huskies will finish up the regular season on Saturday, October 26th with a visit to Calgary to face the 2 and 5 Dinos. The Rams and Alberta Golden Bears also have 2 and 5 records. One 2 and 5 team will secure the final post-season spot during the final weekend of the regular season.
