Mason Nyhus joins Huskie coaching staff
A U of S quarterback, who was part of back-to-back Hardy Cup championships and back-to-back Vanier Cup appearances, is returning to the program. On Friday Huskie head coach, Scott Flory, announced that Mason Nyhus is returning to the team as Assistant Head Coach and Pass Game Coordinator. “Mason will be a phenomenal resource for me, offensive coordinator Jeremy Long, and our offense as a whole”, said Flory. “He’s not far removed from the locker room and can relate to the players.”
Nyhus was a quarterback with the U of S from 2016 to 2022 and was part of three Canada West championship teams, two as a starter. (2021 and 2022) In his final season he was the Canada West player of the year after having over 2,700 yards in passing in eight regular season games.
With Nyhus at the controls, Saskatchewan defeated the Manitoba Bisons in the 2021 Hardy Cup and the Montreal Carabins in the Uteck Bowl before falling short to the Western Mustangs for the national championship. The next season the Huskies defeated the T-Birds in the Hardy Cup at Griffiths Stadium before dominating the St. FX X-Men in the Uteck Bowl. Nyhus holds the Huskie all-time records for most pass completions, passing yards and touchdowns.
Nyhus not only has strong credentials as a player, but as an assistant coach. The Regina product joined the UBC Thunderbirds staff as quarterback coach in 2023, making another trip to the Vanier Cup. The Thunderbirds downed the Alberta Golden Bears for the Canada West title and St. FX in the Mitchell Bowl. “He’s a great coach”, continued Flory. “He’ll get the most out of our players, I’m extremely confident in that.”
