Huskies close in on the Bears
The most lethal power play in Canada West hockey struck again on Friday night as the U of S Huskies defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 4-3 in the first of a two-game series at Merlis Belsher Place. 4th-year Huskie, Chantz Petruic, not only opened the scoring at the 5:20 mark, but broke a 3-3 tie with a man advantage marker with 5:28 remaining in the third period.
The Huskie power play, which went 1-for-3 on Friday, is operating at over 35% this season. (32 goals on 88 chances.) “Against Alberta, you have to rely on the power play sometimes”, said Petruic. “It’s tight checking all night.” Petruic was in on all four Huskie markers with two goals and two assists. He now leads the team with 31 points in 20 games this season.
The Bears were unable to take the lead at any point of the contest. After Alberta sniper, Sean Tschigerl, tied the game early in the second period, the Huskies went ahead 36 seconds later, on Josh Pillar’s seventh goal of the season. Later in the middle frame, Bear forward Josh Prokop tied it at 2, only to have the Dogs’ Dawson Holt score his 9th of the season less than two minutes after. Tshigerl’s second of the game came with 2:29 left in the second period, setting the stage for Petruic’s third period winner in front of over 2,000 fans.
Jordan Kooy improved to 9 and 1 on the season with a 24 save performance. The 4th-year, Bradford Ontario product, has a league best 2.00 Goals Against Average. “He bailed us out when we needed him”, said Petruic.
