The T-Birds touch down in Saskatoon
It’s the regular season finale as the Huskie women’s hockey team hosts the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday at Merlis Belsher Place. Saskatchewan has four regular season games left but were knocked out of playoff contention last weekend despite picking up three of a possible four points against the MacEwan Griffins. Huskie head coach Steve Kook says the team is preparing for the series like they are still in contention. “It’s the competitive nature of the athlete”, said Kook. “Let’s worry about getting ready for next year in two weeks. We’ve got four games to finish off.”
The 21-2-1 Thunderbirds are the top team in the west division of the Canada West conference and have the second-best overall record. “This is the first time we’ve seen them all year”, said Kook. They are nasty to play against. The one thing we know about them is that if we get going early, they panic a little bit.”
Saturday night will be senior night as forwards Jasper Desmarais, Brooklyn Stevely and Taylor Wilkinson graduate from the program. “Taylor is an education student. She is going to move on to teaching. Brooklyn Stevely is done. I believe she may have a teaching job lined up too. Jasper Desmarais is an active nurse. She’s been working at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital for the last year”, Kook said.
