Two chances to secure a number-one finish
There is lots at stake for the Huskie men’s hockey team on the February 14th-15th weekend. Saskatchewan trails Alberta by a single point for top spot in the Canada West east division. The Golden Bears have finished their season, while Saskatchewan has two games remaining against the Manitoba Bisons at Merlis Belsher Place. A first-place finish in the east division means a first-round bye in the conference playoffs.
The Huskies, who have won 21 of 26 regular season games, face a Bison team that will not make the playoffs. Saskatchewan earned a split against potential first round playoff opponent, the UBC Thunderbirds, on the February 7th-8th weekend. After being blanked 3-0 during the Friday night game, the Huskies responded with a crucial 3-2 shoot-out win, the following night in Vancouver.
Coach Brandin Cote will be counting on several of his veteran players on the regular-season finale and during the conference playoffs. Forwards Chantz Petruic and Dawson Holt are third and fourth in conference scoring with 36 and 35 points respectively in 25 regular-season games. 4th-year goaltender Roddy Ross has the best goals against average in the league at 2.06 while teammate Jordan Kooy has won 10 of 11 starts this season.
The Huskies are 4 and 0 against the eight-win Bisons this season. Huskie head coach Brandin Cote chatted with Wray Morrison on this edition of The Coach’s Show.
