Huskies force deciding game
The best power play in the Canada West regular season came to life again on Saturday night as the Huskies pulled out a 3-2 win over the UBC Thunderbirds in the second game of the best of three conference semi final series. Saskatchewan’s power-play, which operated at over 31% in the regular season, was responsible for all three goals including two in the final four and half minutes of the third period to help the home side overcome a late 2-1 deficit.
T-Bird defender Jonny Lambos took a 5-minute charging penalty when he hit an unsuspecting Ben Tkachuk from behind at the Huskie blueline with 5:35 remaining in the third period. Tkachuk left the game with a facial injury and did not return. 4th-year forward, Chantz Petruic, who also scored in Saskatchewan’s 5-4 overtime loss on Friday, tied the game with 4:35 remaining. Then in the final minute, on the same power play, graduating forward Vince Loschiavo converted on a blast that beat UBC goaltender Cole Schewbius to give the Huskies the 3-2 lead with 44 seconds left.
Jordan Kooy, who won 12 of 13 games in the regular season, made 29 stops in the Huskie net for his first win of the 2025 playoffs. U of S defenceman Landon Kosior scored in the first period, while Jake Lee and Jake Wright had first and third period goals for UBC.
Lambos may have to miss Sunday’s deciding game of the series due to suspension. Emotions ran high at times during the game, and after. Following the buzzer, Huskie veteran forward Dawson Holt was slow to leave the ice after an exchange with T-Birds forward Sam Huo after a scrum.
