Cougars and Huskies set to meet in front of sold out crowds at Merlis Belsher Place
For the first time since 2020, the Huskie men’s hockey team looks to put a lock on a Canada West championship as they host the Mount Royal Cougars in a best-of-three league final starting Friday.
While the Huskies finished at the top of Canada West standings with 46 points, the Cougars finished in first place in the west division with 44. The two teams each earned a win in their only weekend series of the regular season.
Third-year Cougar defender, Clay Hanus, led the conference in scoring with 43 points in 28 games this season. Connor Bouchard was fourth with 28. The Huskies had a pair of snipers in the top five in the regular season. Chantz Petruic was third with 37 points, while Dawson Holt had 36.
Mount Royal had a knack for notching big goals at important times this season. Rookie, Justin Lies, had eight game winning goals in the 2024-25 regular season and a league leading nine power play markers. Saskatchewan had the league’s best power play in the regular season and was 28% on the man advantage in game two and three wins over UBC in the conference semifinals. Goaltender Jordan Kooy of the Huskies had a 2.00 goals against average in the two wins.
