On the heels of a nine-hour travel day on Tuesday, from Saskatoon to Ottawa, the Huskie men’s hockey team is in the nation’s capital preparing for the 2025 University Cup. The players took an unexpected two-hour delay in Calgary in stride. “It’s always good to spend it with your buddies”, said 4th-year defenseman, Gunnar Kinniburgh. “It’s been four years now and to finally have a chance to be here with this close group…we’re all just excited to be here together.”

Following Wednesday morning’s U SPORTS men’s hockey awards, the team will skate at TD Place before the eight-team tournament starts on Thursday. (5) Mount Royal faces (4) Toronto Metropolitan at 11:00 AM. At 5:00 PM, the top seeded UNB Varsity Reds take on the 8th-seeded hosts, the Ottawa Gee Gees.

Friday at 11:00 AM, it’s (6) Moncton vs. (3) Concorida. Then at 4:45 PM on HuskieFAN, the second-seeded Huskies take on (7) the Queen’s Golden Gaels. (All Saskatchewan Time)

The U of S has one of the best power-play units in the country and are deep in net with two veteran goaltenders, Roddy Ross and Jordan Kooy, who were at or near the top of the Canada West conference in many statistical categories.

Queen’s had a 22 and 6 regular season record. The Gaels are led by fourth year forward Nolan Hutcheson and second-year sniper Cameron Tolnai. Both players had 29 points in the 28 game OUA season. The Gaels fell short to Concordia in the OUA semi-finals but did blank Toronto 4-0 to claim the league’s bronze medal.

Huskie coach Brandin Cote has said he wants his players focused on what led the team to a 23 and 5 record and a Canada West championship and not be too caught up in the strategy of the opposition. Kinniburgh admits the focus will be for his team to dictate play. “We don’t know a whole lot”, he said. “We watched a little bit, but we are going to take care of ourselves first.”
