Huskies open the season in Alberta capital
Following an intense training camp and a half of exhibition football, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies open the 2025 season in Edmonton against the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday night.
Quarterback Anton Amundrud returns for his third season as a starter. According to the Lloydminster product, and his head coach, Scott Flory, Amundrud will be looked upon to be more vocal this season. He led the conference with 284.4 passing yards per game in 2024 and has many experienced players in skill positions. Daniel Wiebe, who was the leading receiver in the Canada West conference last season, returns at slot back. Running back Ryker Frank, who was third in the conference in rushing in 2024, returns for his 5th season. Tackle Jack Warrack, guards Devon Burnham and Zach LePage and centre Lucas Seffern return along the offensive line.
The Huskies have new coordinators this season, with Mason Nyhus taking over on offence while Cody Halseth was promoted to defensive coordinator. Schematically, there may be a new look to the defence, however, Saskatchewan has many returnees on that side of the ball. Middle linebacker Seth Hundeby returns after attending Saskatchewan Roughriders camp. Like Hundeby, linebackers Jayden Engel (also long snapper) and John Stoll return to the program for their 5th year of eligibility.
In exhibition play, the Huskies led the UBC Thunderbirds 18-2 on August 20th when the game at Griffiths Stadium was called due to threatening weather. The Bears, with new coach Stevenson Bone, suffered a 45-13 loss to the Calgary Dinos on August 18th in a non-conference game in Red Deer.
