The Huskies men’s hockey team continued its dominance of the MacEwan Griffins with a 5-2 win on Saturday to complete a sweep of their weekend series in Edmonton.

Chase Bertholet and Dawson Holt tallied two goals apiece, the latter doing so in his 100th career Canada West regular season game as the Dogs won their 11th straight matchup with the Griffins and 13th in 14 meetings all-time.

It was a lightning-quick start for Saskatchewan as Bertholet opened the scoring just 13 seconds in, matching Kyle Ross for the third-fastest Huskies goal to start a game since 2004-05. The Griffins rebounded to play a strong period, outshooting the Dogs 15-8, but could not beat USask goaltender Jordan Kooy, keeping the score at 1-0 after one.

MacEwan resumed its efforts in the second and finally solved Kooy at the 7:46 mark as Vincent Scott capitalized on a man advantage. It was just the fourth power play goal allowed by the Huskies this season, but they bounced back late in the frame with Holt netting his sixth of the year on a delayed penalty to restore the visitors’ lead.

Griffins forward Caden Cabana was called for interference at the conclusion of the period, putting the Dogs on the power play to begin the third and Bertholet struck quickly again, this time at the 23-second mark. MacEwan’s leading scorer, Kadyn Chabot, answered back less than two minutes later to make it a 3-2 game.

But that’s as close as the home side would get. Holt collected his second goal of the night at 8:42 as a Conner Roulette pass banked off his skate and past Griffins netminder Zac Onyskiw and 71 seconds later, Carter Stebbings sniped his eighth of the season off the rush. Kooy and the Dogs’ defence did the rest, shutting MacEwan down over the final ten minutes to secure the victory.

Kooy finished the night with 29 saves on 31 shots to earn his fifth win of the season, while Onyskiw absorbed his second loss in as many games, stopping 29 of 34 Huskie shots. Both teams were 1-for-4 on the power play. With the win, Saskatchewan pushed its record to 8-3-1. MacEwan is now 6-8-2 on the year.

The Huskies are back on home ice next weekend for another big series as they will host the West Division-leading UBC Thunderbirds in a pair of games at Merlis Belsher Place. The opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday. Fans who can’t attend in person can catch the broadcast on the free HuskieFAN app or on huskiefan.ca.
