Juca shuts out Cougars

Huskies take the first game of home and home series

An early special teams goal and another solid performance from goaltender Clara Juca lifted the USask Huskies to a 3-0 win over the Regina Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night. The victory gives Saskatchewan some breathing room over the U of R in the Canada West, east division standings.

Saskatchewan’s power play, which was running at 14.6% coming into the game, was responsible for the home side’s first goal as Shelby Williamson tipped a McKenna Bolger shot past Cougar goaltender Natalie Williamson at 15:27. “Our power play needed a goal”, said head coach, Steve Kook. “I’m happy they got one right off the bat. Our power play is still a little bit scrambly.”

Regina generated pressure in the second period and had three power play chances but could not get a puck past Juca. Kaysah Nurani gave the Huskies a two goal cushion with a wrap around goal at the eight-minute mark of the middle frame.

Regina took two of the three minor penalties in the third period and could not find the offense to get back into the game. Third-year USask forward, Kahlen Wisener, put the contest out of reach on a shot from between the face off circles at the 4:50 mark to round out the scoring.

Juca, a second-year Huskie goaltender from New Westminster, BC, made 20 stops for her third win in six starts this season. “I’m really proud of our team”, Juca said. “That early goal really set the tone for the game.”

When asked about Juca’s effort in net, Kook said the team has her full trust. “She’s only a second-year goalie, but she’s consistent. What she’s good at is managing the game. It’s a little bit more relaxing in our zone.”

Juca, who turned in a solid 39 save performance last Saturday in a 1-0 loss to the number one ranked UBC Thunderbirds, is gaining confidence and the November 30th effort in her home province seemed to help. “That was the first time my parents saw me play in two years….it was super important to have a good game”, she said.

Saskatchewan is now 7-6 and 2 and has opened a three-point lead over the U of R for third place in the east division. The Cougars are now 5-7-1-2. The two schools meet again on Saturday night in the second game of the home and home series in Regina. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app, with coverage starting at 6:45 PM.
