Huskies finish 2025 with second straight shutout win

The Huskies women’s hockey team is entering the holiday break on the strength of a sweep after shutting out the Regina Cougars for a second straight game to close out their first semester schedule.

One night after Clara Juca backstopped the Dogs to a 3-0 victory on home ice, Colby Wilson turned aside 32 shots for her second shutout of the season in a 1-0 win at Co-Operators Arena in Regina.

“Both of them are really rolling right now. It’s a nice problem to have. We can just roll and rotate and let them go,” head coach Steve Kook said.

“Usually you try and find a goalie that’s having a run but when you have two that are having a run, I know they probably don’t like it but it’s good for us.”

It’s the second straight season that the Huskies have swept their final series before the break with back-to-back shutouts. Last year, Wilson turned the trick twice in a pair of road wins over the MacEwan Griffins. However, those were the Dogs’ first two victories of the season while the current team is now up to eight wins after Saturday’s triumph, coming on the heels of a strong showing against the top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds one week ago.

“We had a pretty good weekend at UBC and just to see us carry that through for another weekend was just awesome to see and you could tell that everyone wanted the win and was giving it their all,” Wilson said.

After a quiet opening period, both teams ratcheted up their intensity in the second, trading several good scoring chances before Paris Oleksyn finally broke the ice at the 15:46 mark, putting a rebound past Cougars goaltender Amy Swayze for her second goal of the season.

Saskatchewan held a 22-17 edge in shots after forty minutes but the tables turned in the third as Regina pushed for an equalizer. The Cougars peppered Wilson with 15 shots in the final frame but could not solve the fifth-year netminder, who also had to contend with a broken skate lace midway through the period.

All three Huskie goaltenders have now blanked the Cougars this season with Emma Backman also accomplishing the feat in the teams’ first meeting on October 24. For Wilson, Saturday marked the ninth shutout of her U SPORTS career.

“Our crew is awesome. A big thing that we’ve tried to do since Cam (Drever) and I were here is really have a solid group dynamic and be able to support each other as we’re playing, so to see us all being able to thrive is really exciting,” Wilson said.

Most importantly, the victory gives USask a five-point lead over their southern rivals for the third and final playoff spot in the East Division of the Canada West conference with a record of 8-6-2. Regina has lost six straight games to fall to 5-8-2. The teams will meet twice more this season on January 30 and 31.

The Dogs will play four straight home games when play resumes in the new year, starting with a series against the Manitoba Bisons that opens on January 9. Fans can listen to every Huskie game on the free HuskieFAN app.
