With new goaltender on board, Huskies travel to Manitoba to face the Bisons
A new calendar year, a new goaltender but the same goal. The Huskies men’s hockey team continues pursuit of a second straight Canada West men’s title on the January 9th-10th weekend by visiting the Manitoba Bisons.
USask has bolstered its goaltending stable with the addition of Nolan Maier, who in 2023 set the WHL record for most career wins while with the Saskatoon Blades. He joins fifth-year goaltender Jordan Kooy and first-year Huskie Bryan Thompson.
Saskatchewan’s special teams are again a major threat that opposing teams must be mindful of. The Huskies have the best penalty kill in Canada West hockey at 88.5% while the team’s power play has steadily gotten better, running third in the conference at 27% with 12 games remaining in the regular season.
The Huskies also have games in hand on the teams ahead of them in the standings. Saskatchewan has two games in hand on Mount Royal as the Huskies trail the Cougars by one point for second spot in the east division. USask also has two games in hand on the Calgary Dinos who top the division with 30 points. The Huskies, who have 23 points, face the Dinos two more times during the regular season.
