Manitoba sweeps Huskies at Merlis Belsher Place
The Huskie women’s hockey team was pressured on the ice and now they are being pressured in the Canada West standings. The Manitoba Bisons downed the Huskies 4-1 on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place and now sit two points back of USask for the third and final playoff spot in the Canada West’s east division.
The visitors dominated play in the first 40 minutes and jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a first period goal from Julia Bird and second period markers from Dana Goertzen and Aimee Patrick. Huskie head coach Steve Kook suggested that shots on goal statistics can be overrated, but Manitoba held a 30-14 advantage after two periods of play. “They out chanced us”, said Kook. “They are a full pressure team and we just could not handle the pressure.
Saskatchewan turned up its intensity in the third period, and it led to the team’s first goal of the weekend series. Veteran Bronwyn Boucher tipped in a Jayde Cadieux shot two minutes into the final frame to cut Manitoba’s lead to two. However, Brenna Nicol put a puck into an empty net 1:52 left.
Bison goaltender Emily Shippam made 16 saves for the win. Clara Juca made 25 stops in the Saskatchewan net. Manitoba scored once on three power play chances, while the Huskies 0-for-4 on Saturday and 0-for-9 in the weekend series.
