The Huskies have all but clinched top spot in the Prairie Division of Canada West women’s basketball, while keeping a season long undefeated streak intact. USask posted a 63-45 victory over the Regina Cougars in a rare Thursday night game at the PAC. The Huskies are 17-0 on the season, while the U of R fell to 15-2.

Saskatchewan’s defense was sensational holding the visitors to single digits in three of the four quarters of the contest. Gage Grassick had 8 of the Huskies’ 29 defensive rebounds, while Regina was just 27% from the floor.

Offensively, fourth year guard Logan Reider gave the Huskies some first quarter momentum with a big shot from the key while drawing a foul to complete a three-point play. That helped the Huskies to an early 8-7 advantage. Saskatchewan followed that up with a 23 point second quarter, to open a 37-13 halftime lead.

The Cougars showed some resilience after the break, pulling to within 11 points. Cara Misskey had 13 of her 25 points in the third quarter. However, Saskatchewan’s defence stiffened again in the fourth quarter, holding Regina to eight points. Grassick and Maya Flindall had 14 points each while Reider had 12 off the bench.

Regina’s men’s team moved to 6-11 with a 72-66 win over the Huskies. Lodie Kenyi poured in 27, making three 3-pointers. Easton Thimm had 15 points for the Huskies. USask now dips to 5-12 on the season.

The Huskie women’s and men’s teams visit the Cougars in the second games of the home and home series’ Saturday night in Regina.
