Another weekend of football, another game with top spot in the Canada West standings on the line. Following a 38-31 September 26th win over the Regina Rams, the 3-1 USask Huskies host the 3-1 UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon at Griffiths Stadium.

Saskatchewan blew open a 17-17 game with 21 third quarter points over the provincial rival Rams last Saturday in Regina to secure a share of top spot in the conference. “There were some things on offense that we wanted to continue operating”, said Huskie head coach Scott Flory. Three drives, totalling 187 yards in offense, lifted the visitors to a 38-17 lead and eventual victory.

Quarterback Anton Amundrud had 369 yards in passing and two touchdowns in the victory, while veteran receiver, Dawson Lennea had over 100 yards in receiving and two touchdowns.

The Thunderbirds roll in to Griffiths Stadium with one of the top ground games in the country. The player who wears #1 for UBC is number one in rushing in the conference. First-year running back Marvyn Larozar is averaging over 145 yards per game this season and has scored seven touchdowns. Another Ontario product, receiver Trey Montour (#21) is third in Canada West receiving, averaging 88 yards/contest.

UBC pounded Manitoba 31-6 in Winnipeg on September 26th with quarterback Drew Viotto throwing for 290 yards and two touchdowns. “From an offensive standpoint, they’re explosive”, said Flory.  Their offense is going to run through #1 and #21. Take away the explosive nature of those two athletes, you have a good chance.”

Asked what he’d like to see his team improve on in the final half of the regular season, Flory said he’s like some strides in the kick-off return game, consistency on defense and to be able to establish more of a pattern in the run game.

The Huskies have posted four straight wins over UBC, including last season’s Hardy Cup semifinal, 26-7. The T-Birds’ last win in Saskatoon was in 2017. After Saturday’s game, the two teams will meet again on October 30th in Vancouver.

Saturday’s Thunderbird-Huskie game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app and on Beach Radio, 750 with pre-game coverage beginning at 1:45 PM. Play-by-play starts at 2:00 PM.
