Quick start propels Huskies to victory over Thunderbirds

The Huskies men’s hockey team gave itself some early breathing room on the way to a 6-3 win over the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night in Vancouver.

The Dogs scored three goals in the opening 10:27 and maintained a multi-goal lead for the rest of the game as they won for the eighth time in their last nine visits to the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre and first trip back since sweeping the T-birds in the Canada West semifinals last season.

USask wasted no time opening the scoring as Carter Stebbings netted a power play goal 2:01 into the game. Logan Bairos then added two more from the blueline in a span of 3:28 to open up a quick 3-0 lead.

Zeke Nicholson pulled one back late in the frame but the Huskies restored the three-goal lead early in the second period as Liam Keeler scored another power play marker, his third on the man advantage this season.

Ty Thorpe replied with a power play goal for UBC but four minutes later, Raphael Pelletier deflected a Carter Stebbings feed past T-birds netminder Cole Schwebius to extend his goal-scoring streak to four games.

The Thunderbirds continued to press in the third but didn’t score again until the 18:20 mark as Josh Williams cashed in with Schwebius pulled for an extra attacker. That’s as close as UBC would get as Tyler Parr salted things away with an empty net goal in the final second to cap off the Huskies’ third straight win.

The Dogs now sit at 6-1 on the season while the Thunderbirds are 3-2. The teams meet again on Saturday with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m. PST.
