Bertholet beauty seals Huskies OT victory in Vancouver

Chase Bertholet played the hero with a great individual effort as the Huskies men’s hockey team downed the UBC Thunderbirds 3-2 in overtime to secure a sweep of their weekend series in Vancouver.

A minute and a half into the extra frame, Bertholet grabbed a loose puck inside the T-birds blueline, exited the zone then quickly curled back in before dancing around a Thunderbirds defender and faking out goaltender Brendan Gee for his third goal of the season, lifting the Dogs to their fourth straight win and seventh in eight games to open the campaign.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy coming into UBC. It never is. I think we just went to work, played our system and we were fortunate enough to come out on top here at the end,” Bertholet said.

After earning a 6-3 win on Friday against a sluggish UBC team that was coming off a bye week, the Dogs jumped out to another solid start in the rematch. Keaton Sorensen opened the scoring midway through the opening period on Saskatchewan’s first power play of the game, and four minutes later he intercepted an outlet pass inside the T-birds blueline and fed Ashton Ferster who lasered a wrist shot past Gee to double the advantage.

But unlike the previous night, the Thunderbirds managed to reel the Huskies back in. Austin Fraser beat Bryan Thomson with a slapshot from the right faceoff circle to halve the deficit in the second period, then Josh Williams leveled the score with a power play goal five minutes into the third.

Saturday’s game had a playoff-type feel at times, especially in the final frame when open ice was increasingly hard to come by. Both teams made several key shot blocks and the physical play also ratcheted up a few notches compared to Friday’s matchup.

“It was a good, hard-nosed game, not a lot of room out there, pretty structured for the most part and you had to earn every inch. I think it’s great to be in games like that,” head coach Brandin Cote said.

“You’ve gotta get comfortable playing in these games and find a way to win and pull them out, and if it takes overtime, it takes overtime. Overall, I was really proud of our effort, especially with us being a little shorthanded in certain positions. Guys stepped up and played hard and played well.”

After combining for just eight total shots in the third, it was off to overtime and after the T-birds failed to score in the opening minute, the Huskies took over, and Bertholet wasted little time burying the winner.

“It’s really exciting and honestly just doing anything to help my team win in moments like that, it really helps when you know you have a good, solid team behind you, really good structure, knowing you have a really good goalie, good d-zone, you can feel comfortable going to make plays like that,” the third-year forward said.

The Huskies maintained their grip on top spot in the Canada West with Saturday’s triumph, improving to 7-1. The Thunderbirds salvaged a point from the weekend series and now sit at 3-2-1. The teams will meet four more times this season; twice in Saskatoon in mid-January and twice in Vancouver a month later on the final weekend of the campaign.

After playing five of their last six games on the road, the Dogs now return home for their next two series sandwiched around their first bye week of the season. They won’t hit the road again until Nov. 27, when they visit the Alberta Golden Bears.
