Ticket sales grow as Huskie fans ready for a return to live sports

After an unprecedented 2020 U Sports athletic season, or lack thereof due to the pandemic, University of Saskatchewan (U of S) Huskie fans are ready to get back into the stadiums and bleachers to cheer on their favourite teams.

Associate Athletics Officer Program Development with Huskie Athletics at the U of S, Michael Jenkins said about 95 per cent of season tickets for Huskie football have been renewed compared to where they were two years ago.

“There’s such a pent-up demand for people to get out of their homes and back into sporting facilities,” Jenkins said.

Season tickets sales have been going well for all sports including Huskie hockey at Merlis Belsher Place where Mike Babcock will grace the bench as head coach and women’s hockey is on the rise.

Single tickets and walk-up tickets are also currently available through the U of S Huskies website or by calling 306-966-1111. There are also group ticket options and experience packages but Jenkins said those will depend on what COVID-19 restrictions are in place at any given time.

“Tickets are on sale for this weekend. There is non-conference hockey at Merlish Belsher Place, conference soccer games this weekend at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park and our first Huskie football game is this Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Nutrien Park as well,” Jenkins said. “Lots of great opportunities to gather up family, friends and colleagues and come cheer on the Huskies.”

For those who want to support the Huskies but aren’t quite ready to make the jump back into large crowds, donations can be made to your team of choice or to scholarships.

“We have 400 athletes taking full academic classes and they’re stretched thin between school, games, training and practices and being on the road, so certainly if people want to support Huskie Athletics they can make donations to their favourite team or to help us recruit the best and brightest students we need scholarship money, so people can visit the website to donate and its all charitably receipted so a great opportunity to support the program that way.”

Regardless of how you cheer them on, Jenkins promised the calibre of all Huskie events to be top notch.

“A lot of our student athletes – this is their pinnacle and what they aspired to when they were at the grassroots at 5, 6 and 7 years old. It’s tremendous competition. All our national championships are coast to coast and broadcast on national TV and this year HuskieFAN.ca is a great opportunity to help further brand Huskies and get exposure for our teams, students, athletes and our program,” Jenkins said. “It’s a tremendous partnership we’re really excited about.”

The HuskieFAN app delivers every U of S Huskies home and road game for football, men’s hockey and women’s hockey. All three teams will have their own dedicated livestream. The HuskieFAN.ca website also includes game replays, podcasts, news and team happenings.
