Media/fans share football team’s “standards and expectations” according to Scott Flory

The one and only undefeated team in Canada West football visits the Huskies this weekend as the 4 and 0 UBC Thunderbirds touch down at Griffiths Stadium on Friday night. For the third time this season, the Huskies had to come from behind last Friday for a 28-12 win over the Dinos in Calgary. The 3 and 1 Huskies also fell behind in their season opening win over Manitoba and never did have the lead in a week three, 26-22 loss to Alberta.

The Thunderbirds have jumped out to a 4 and 0 start for the first time since 1992. It’s been some time since the Huskies have had to play a team above them in the standings. Head coach Scott Floy is comfortable with where his team is at, even though some fans and media members may not be. “I love the fact that the standards and the expectations have crept to the outside”, said Flory. “A 3 and 1 record…10 years ago…you guys would have been jumping for joy at this point. We lose a game and it’s like the sky is falling! That’s awesome because that’s the expectation and the standard that we have with this program.”

That said, Flory has full confidence that his players are ready for any challenge that comes their way, despite having to overcome some deficits this season. “I’m not worried about this team. This is a great group of kids that are all bought in. We are physical, we are growing.” The head coach was then asked if he thought his team was playing was good enough football to return to the Vanier Cup. “I don’t know, that’s a good question. We’re growing. I’m not worried about the end of the season right now. I’m worried about week 5.”

The Thunderbirds hammered Alberta 54-37 last weekend to maintain an unblemished record. UBC pivot Garrett Rooker was named the Canada West player of the week after throwing for 363 yards and three touchdowns. “They are a ground and pound offense”, said Flory. “They are going to get 11 (Rooker) on the edge. He’s athletic, he’s going to run around. They will try to unlock guys. Their offense isn’t dissimilar to ours. They’re playing with a high level of confidence.”

Former Huskie quarterback Mason Nyhus makes his first appearance in Saskatchewan as UBC’s quarterback coach. Nyhus graduated from the Huskie program last season, after helping lead Saskatchewan to the 2021 and 2022 Vanier Cup championships and setting the school record for passing. “It’ll be good to see him, but weird to see him in blue”, said Flory. “We’ll treat him like any other opponent.”

Running back Josh Ewanchyna is expected to make his season debut on Friday, while receiver Daniel Wiebe and corner back Finn Marcotte-Cribb are both ready to return from injuries, according to Flory.

Friday’s game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app starting at 6:45pm with the Elk Ridge Resort Pre-Game Show. Play-by-play, powered by PlayNOW.com, with Wray Morrison and Rich Gabruch starts at 7pm.
