Huskies look to defeat Alberta for the first time this season in CW semi-final

As the (5-3) Huskies and (6-2) Golden Bears meet for the third time this season, this time in a Canada West semi-final, there are few secrets. “Their offense runs through #30”, said Saskatchewan head coach Scott Flory. “Matthew Peterson is a special back.” Peterson, a fourth year Bear from Brooks Alberta, averaged an incredible 141 yards on the ground in each of the 8 regular season games Alberta played this season.

Peterson had a 191 rushing yards in a 26-22 win over the Huskies on September 15th at Griffiths Stadium and 168 yards on the ground in a 23-20 victory against Saskatchewan on October 14th at Foote Field. Flory stressed the keys for his defense to succeed on Saturday. “Understand the situation, play within the scheme, and do your job. We’ll make plays.” Saskatchewan’s defense is deep. Defensive lineman Nathan Jule led Canada West in sacks, while linebacker Nick Wiebe topped the conference in tackles.

While Alberta’s offense struggled in a 25-10 loss to UBC last weekend, the Huskies put up a season high 43 points against the Rams in Regina to end the regular season. 1st year starting quarterback, Anton Amundrud threw for 280 yards and tossed two touchdown passes in Saskatchewan’s 43-11 victory.

Flory, who also calls the offensive plays for the Huskies, has been encouraged by Amundrud’s development this season. “He’s got a big arm. He can throw the ball. It’s about managing the football game. Trusting your eyes, your reads and your runs. This has been a growth journey. I expect an awesome game out of him on Saturday.”

Saturday’s game from Foote Field in Edmonton can be hard on the free HuskieFAN app with Wray Morrison and Rich Gabruch. The Elk Ridge Resort Pre-Game Show starts at 4:45pm. Play-by-play, powered by PlayNOW.com, starts at 5:00pm.

The (6-2) UBC Thunderbirds host the (3-5) Manitoba Bisons in the other Canada West football semi-final. The T-Birds defeated the Bisons 56-10 in their lone meeting in Vancouver on September 16th.
