Mount Royal among teams in tight battle in Canada West standings

Nov 30, 2023 | 8:21 AM

There is little room for error in Canada West men’s hockey. Three points separate the top five teams in the standings, while Alberta, the Mount Royal Cougars and the Huskies all sit in a 3rd-place tie with 22 points. (The Huskies have two games in hand.) In what will be a crucial series, Saskatchewan hosts Mount Royal on December 1st and 2nd at Merlis Belsher Place in the lead up to the holiday break.

The Huskies outscored the 2nd place UBC Thunderbirds 10-5 in a two games series on November 17th and 18th. Third year forward Chantz Petruic had three points in a 6-2 victory on the 17th and now leads the team in scoring. “Typically, the third year is where you either take a step forward or you take a step back”, said head coach Brandin Cote. “I’ve always said (Petruic) is one of our most talented players. He’s always going to be a threat offensively, but he’s doing things away from the puck and that’s a big contributing reason why he’s getting more offensive too.”

Mount Royal moved in to the USports top 10 rankings following back-to-back wins over Trinity Western University on the November 24th-25th weekend. The Cougars have the top two scorers in the conference. 2nd year forward Connor Bouchard has 29 points in 14 games while Excelsior, Minnesota product, Clayton Hanus, has 23 points.

7th ranked Saskatchewan counters with some great goaltending. Third year keeper Roddy Ross has a league best 1.83 goals against average while Jordan Kooy has won 3 of 5 games this season. Kooy made 21 saves for the win in the November 18th 4-3 win over the Thunderbirds.

The December 1st game starts at 7:00 pm at Merlis Belsher Place. Puck drop is at 5:00 pm for the December 2nd contest.
