Huskies fall to 5th place in Canada West standings

Third period domination for Mount Royal

The Mount Royal Cougars passed the U of S Huskies in the Canada West men’s hockey standings on Friday night with a 3-1 over Saskatchewan at Merlis Belsher Place. The Huskies found themselves playing from behind early when conference leading scorer, Connor Bouchard, scored 17 seconds into the contest. Bouchard has 30 points in 15 games this season. The Huskies were able to get on even footing when Justin Ball scored his sixth of the campaign in the final minute of the first period.

After a scoreless second period, the Cougars were able to pull away in the final frame thanks to a pair of goals 61 seconds apart. Spencer Moe scored with the man advantage to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at 7:37. At the 8:38 mark, defenseman Jaden Senkoe, added an insurance marker. Mount Royal outshot Saskatchewan 8-3 in the final frame. Cougar goaltender Shane Farkas made 26 saves to register his 9th win of the season. Saskatchewan’s Roddy Ross made 24 stops on 27 shots.

The Cougars and Alberta Golden Bears are tied for third spot in the standings with 24 points, while the Huskies fall to fifth place with 22. Mount Royal and the Huskies meet again at 5:00 pm on Saturday afternoon at Merlis Belsher Place. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca
