With games in hand, the Huskies prepare for stretch drive

Following an unplanned 12-day break the Huskie men’s hockey team returns to action on Friday night. Saskatchewan visits the MacEwan Griffins for the second and final regular season series between the teams on January 19th and 20th at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton.

January 12th and 13th games against Trinity Western were cancelled after the Huskies could not get to Langley, BC because of flight delay issues. There is a possibility of the Huskies having to visit the Spartans in the middle of the week, later this season, to make these games up. Huskie coach Brandin Cote does not believe this unexpected turn of events will be a hinderance to his team.

“I honestly believe this will be a positive for us”, he said. “You’re going to have less rest, but you just play. We have to get these games in. The standings are getting tight, so we are happy to play any time, anywhere!” The Huskies are in 5th place in the Canada West standings, four points back of Mount Royal with two games in hand. (Six teams make Canada West playoffs. The 3rd and 4th place teams host quarter-final series. The top two teams get a bye to the semi-finals.)

The U of S defeated MacEwan 6-2 and 2-1 in a shoot-out at Merlis Belsher Place back in October. The Griffins are sitting in the final playoff spot in the Canada West standings but have won just 6 of 22 regular season games. “They are a team that can’t be taken lightly”, said Cote. “Their goaltenders have played well. We have to go in with the mentality that we are going to get those points.”
