The rivalry continues for alumni weekend and Hockey Fights Cancer night

Jan 26, 2024 | 10:03 AM

It could be argued that it is the greatest regular season rivalry in Canada West men’s hockey. The Alberta Golden Bears visit the Huskies on Friday and Saturday at Merlis Belsher Place. Not only is it alumni weekend for the Hustlin’ Huskies, but Saturday marks the annual “Hockey Fights Cancer” night.

Saskatchewan sits two points back of the 4th-place Bears in a tight Canada West conference. The Huskies have two games in hand. (The top four teams earn home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.) The U of S split a pair of games with Alberta earlier this season. The Huskies earned a 3-1 win at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton back on November 3rd, the Bears responded with a 4-3 win in the Alberta capital the next night.

Saskatchewan is coming off of a 17-goal weekend against MacEwan in which they defeated the Griffins by scores of 10-0 and 7-2 on January 19th and 20th. The Bears had a bye last weekend and look to rebound after having a 7-game win streak snapped back on January 13th when they fell to the Calgary Dinos, 5-0.

HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison caught up with Huskie head coach Brandin Cote about the victories over MacEwan and this weekend’s series against the Bears on The Coach’s Show.

The January 26th game starts at 7:00 pm at Merlis Belsher Place. The January 27th contest starts at 5:00 pm. Both games can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca.
