A three point weekend

Bears win on power play, overtime goal

His team may have suffered an emotional overtime defeat on Saturday night, however Huskie men’s hockey coach Brandin Cote spoke about the positives following a 2-1 overtime loss to the Alberta Golden Bears at Merlis Belsher Place. “This was a great weekend for us”, said Cote. “We took three of four points from a really good team.” (Saskatchewan doubled Alberta 4-2 on Friday night in the series opener.)

The Bears took the lead midway through the first period of the series finale on Connor McClennon’s 1st goal of the season. Cote said he liked his team’s start despite being outshot 10-7 in the first 20 minutes. “It went back and forth”, said Cote. “We took momentum early, but they took it back.”

After a scoreless second period, the Huskies came out with great pace in the third. Saskatchewan began the final frame with a 1:23 power play on a penalty carry-over from the middle frame. Shortly after the penalty ended Justin Ball scored his 11th of the season to tie the game at one.

Unfortunately for the fans overtime lacked flow due to several late penalty calls. The referees were Karlin Krieger and Ty Skene. The Huskies had to kill off a Golden Bear power play to start extra time as Vince Loschiavo was given a high-sticking call with 2 seconds remaining in the third period. 40 seconds into the 5-minute session, Alberta’s Josh Prokop was given a hooking call. At the 3:03 mark, Loschiavo was sent back to the box for a trip. It was on that power play that Bear sniper Eric Florchuk scored the game winning goal.

Cote was asked about the late penalty calls with the game on the line. “It’s unfortunate that the two teams couldn’t’ figure it out themselves. Two top teams, going toe to toe. Let us sort it out ourselves. We just want our players to play.”

With the win the Golden Bears return to 4th-place in the Canada West standings with 34 points. With Saturday’s point the Huskies have 33 with two games in hand on Alberta. Saskatchewan visits Mount Royal on February 2nd and 3rd then continues westward to make up a pair of rescheduled games against Trinity Western University in Langley, BC on February 5th and 6th.
