Huskie women’s hockey look ahead

After missing the 2025-’26 Canada West women’s hockey playoffs by just two points, the Huskie women’s hockey squad is looking at the changes required to get to the post-season come February of 2027. Head coach Steve Kook believes added depth and grit will help the team improve on its 12 win, 30-point campaign from a year ago. “We can be skilled and fast but without the grit and willingness to compete it doesn’t translate”, he said. 

Veteran forward Jayde Cadieux led USask in scoring with 17 points in 28 games last season. Cadieux, Kahlen Wisener and Shelby Williamson combined for 34 points. “We need more contribution offensively throughout the lineup”, said Kook.  “I expect our veterans such as Jayde, Shelby, and Kahlen to pick up and continue where they left off last season. We need the rest to add to that and be consistent threats every weekend.” 

As for newcomers that may make immediate offensive contributions in 2026-27, Kook says it’s an unknown until conference play begins. “We always look ahead and try to predict who will make an impact in their first years based off what they did in U18/Prep but the reality is we really don’t know until they get into the season. For some the adjustment of a faster and more physical game is easier than expected. For others the added importance of structured play and the addition of university classes require more time to find their stride as an athlete.”

Kook believes the team will be strong in net with the combination of new recruits and returning veterans. Warman’s Mikayla Christmann will transfer to the University of Saskatchewan from the MacEwan Griffins for the upcoming season as will Saskatoon’s Kelsey Ledoux from Trinity Western.
