Ring up another Huskie victory

The Saskatchewan Huskies celebrated their past and present Friday night, unfurling their 2026 national championship banner and receiving their championship rings before securing an 81-69 victory over the Manitoba Bisons.

The night also featured a halftime tribute to 1950s Huskiette legend Peggy McKercher, who was recently named the 2026 U SPORTS Alumni of the Year. The back-to-back Bronze Baby champions then capped the evening by demonstrating exactly why they remain the class of Canadian university women’s basketball.

After a frigid first quarter in which they shot just 2-for-13 from the field, the Huskies implemented key game-plan adjustments to overcome the slow start and maintain their perfect record to open the season.

Fifth-year veteran Maya Flindall paced the University of Saskatchewan, scoring a team-high 25 points. Flindall hit three standard field goals from beyond the arc and went 8-of-9 from the free-throw line, while adding three assists and two steals.

Fellow seniors Logan Reider and Olivia Harm provided plenty of offensive support, chipping in 18 and 17 points, respectively.

Despite the Saskatchewan victory, Manitoba forward Anna Miko delivered the game’s most dominant individual performance. The six-foot-two Winnipeg native recorded a massive double-double in the losing effort, shooting a staggering 13-of-18 from the field to finish with 29 points and 14 rebounds.

The Huskies struggled to contain Miko in the paint, opting instead to focus their defensive efforts on disrupting Manitoba’s mid-range and perimeter opportunities.

With the victory, Saskatchewan improves to 3-0 on the season, while Manitoba drops to 2-1.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday at the Physical Activity Complex. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
