The Huskies rode two first period power play goals to a 2-0 shutout win over the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place. Saskatchewan entered the weekend with a power play that was running at 28.1%. That percentage improved early in the game.

Jaydon Dureau’s goal on a 5-on-3 power play lifted Saskatchewan to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. The Huskies scored on the second Spartans power play when Keaton Sorenson buried his fourth of the season with a tip in front of TWU goaltender Raphael Audet.

The Huskies outshot the Spartans 39-16 in the first 40 minutes and 55-23 in the game. Audet, a fifth-year goaltender from Rimouski made a number of big saves for Trinity Western. “We were snake bitten 5-on-5”, said head coach Brandin Cote. “Overall, I thought it was a good game. We were disciplined.” Saskatchewan was 2-for-4 on the power play while the Spartans were 0-for-2.

Saskatoon product Tyson Yaremko made his Huskie regular season debut. “I thought he was great”, said head coach Brandin Cote. “He’s just going to keep getting better. He’s going to be a big part of this team.”

Yaremko, a winger who played five full seasons in the Western Hockey League, was part of the Portland Winterhawks team that advanced to the 2024 league final. “The pace was pretty quick, but I thought I handled it pretty well”, he said.

When asked about his style of game, Yaremko said, “I’d like to think I’m a 200-foot player. I like to get gritty, but I can make some plays too.”

Huskie goaltender Nolan Maier picked up his sixth win of the season with a 23-save performance. Saskatchewan improved to 8-1 on the season, while the young Spartans are still searching for their first win of the season.
