The University of Saskatchewan Huskies didn’t let off the gas Friday night, taking their first game against the University of Alberta Pandas into double overtime.

The Pandas’ Natalie Kieser opened scoring 19:08 minutes into the first period at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton. That effort assisted by Megan Wilson and Madison Willan.

The defending Canada West champions maintained a 1-0 lead late into the third period. Huskies’ Kelsey Hall dumped the puck towards the Pandas’ net to score unassisted a second shy of the 17-minute mark.

“Typically I wouldn’t do that, so when I did that I was just hoping to make a play out of it, have a bounce. Then all of a sudden it was in,” Hall said.

Tied 1-1, the game carried into double overtime for a five-minute, three-on-three battle.

Off a pass from Kendra Zuchotzki to Kennedy Brown, third-year forward Jordyn Holmes notched the game winner at 3:50.

“I’m not normally a big-scoring girl, but tonight I was. It feels amazing,” said Holmes, donning the team’s “player of the game” green cape.

“The second half here is huge for points, and getting this win here tonight is huge. We’ve just gotta keep going in order to get ourselves where we want to be for playoffs,” Holmes said.

Saskatchewan netminder, and Edmonton product, Cameron Drever made 19 saves in her twelfth start of the season.

“The whole game I could see it from my end just developing and developing … and when Jordyn finally hit that goal for us at the end there, all the stress was gone,” she said.

“It just felt so good, I was so happy for everyone.”

Drever was quick to give kudos to the team’s offensive pressure, which resulted in only four shots on goal against the Huskies in the second period.

On the other end, Pandas goaltender Halle Oswald made 29 saves on the night.

Only one penalty was incurred the entire game — a hooking call against the Pandas’ Megan Wilson 16:50 into the first period.

Friday’s win maintains the Huskies’ fourth position in the Canada West standings with 18 points.

“This is a big win for us, and it’s a huge character win too,” said Hall.

“Everyone knows what role they have, and they’re okay playing it. So I think just bringing that into tomorrow too is going to help us.”

The rematch is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST on Saturday, Jan. 23 at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
