The Huskie women’s hockey team rang in the 2025 portion of the Canada West women’s hockey schedule with a 3-1 win over their provincial rival, the Regina Cougars, on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place. After failing to pick up a regulation win in its first 14 games, Saskatchewan has now reeled off three straight victories.

Eight and a half minutes into first period, third year forward Shelby Williamson scored her first goal of the season. A little over two minutes later 4th-year Huskie Bronwyn Boucher scored her fourth power-play goal of the of the campaign to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Boucher’s goal proved to be the game winner. “I’m so happy, because we’ve put in a lot of work this year”, Boucher said. “It’s good to be rewarded. I’m so proud of the girls.”

4th-year goaltender Colby Wilson was sensational in the second period as the statistics showed Regina outshot Saskatchewan 14-3 in the middle frame. The fourth-year Huskie turned aside 32 Cougar shots in total. “She really held us in there”, said Boucher. “We need to do a better job in the D-zone to help her out.”

Regina product Avery Gottselig gave the Huskies a little more insurance with her first marker of the season with at 16:45 of the second period. The Cougars got on the board with seven seconds left when Megan Long buried a power play marker. The Cougars outshot the Huskies 12-6 in a scoreless third period.

The Huskies, who were already missing veterans Sara Kendall and Taylor Wilkinson due to injury, had to shorten the bench with more players having to leave Friday’s game. “We’ve had a bumpy season with injuries”, said Boucher. “Two girls got their first goals of the season tonight which is huge. (First-year players) kind of pop up in little moments. It’s a great opportunity for young players to step up.”

Huskie head coach Steve Kook was not at the game on Friday night due to a flu bug. Assistant coaches Christine Bumstead, Robin Ulrich and Brian MacGregor ran the bench. The U of S will visit the Cougars in the second game of the home-and-home series on Saturday night at 7:00 PM at the Co-operators Centre in Regina. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
