Huskies play final home game of the season on Saturday
The Huskie women’s hockey team will make one final appearance at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday afternoon before wrapping up the 2024-25 Canada West hockey season in Manitoba on the February 14th-15th weekend. Saskatchewan looks to rebound after losing the first of a two-game series to the UBC Thunderbirds, 9-0, on Friday night. Experience was the deciding factor. The visitors had 16 fourth-and-fifth year players in their lineup while the Huskies, who have been bitten by injuries this season, iced 12 first- and second-year players.
The T-Birds rallied with a five-goal second period. Jacquelyn Fleming, who scored in the first period, set up UBC’s second goal by Grace Elliot in the first minute of the middle frame to make it 2-0. The visitors poured it on after that. After Ashton Thorpe made it 3-0, Karine Sandilands and Mya Healy buried back-to-back markers, a minute and a half apart…and it was 5-0. Chanreet Bassi struck on the power play in the final minute of the second period and it was 6-0 after 40 minutes.
Huskie goaltender Emma Backman faced 34 shots before being pulled in the third period after a Jaylyn Morris goal at the 7:22 mark on the power play. MacKenzie Kordic had a pair of third period markers to round out the scoring. Thunderbirds goaltender Elise Hugens, now 16-1, made 24 saves for the shutout. UBC’s record improved to 22-2-1 with the win. The T-Birds secured a first-place finish in the west division and a first round bye in the Canada West playoffs. Saskatchewan is now 5-14-4-2.
The U of S will honour their graduating players on Saturday. Jasper Desmarais, Brooklyn Stevely and Taylor Wilkinson will all play in their final home games as Huskies in the second game of the series against UBC. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app at 5:00 PM.
