Going camping

As the USask football team prepares for Thursday’s Dog’s Breakfast followed by 2025 spring camp, three players from the program will take part in Canadian Football League camps. Linebacker Seth Hundeby was selected 34th overall by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Tuesday’s CFL draft. Linebacker Lane Novak was taken by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the fifth round, while receiver Daniel Wiebe went to the Riders in round eight.

Hundeby, who attended Holy Cross high school, was fifth in tackles in the Canada West conference in 2024 with a pair of sacks. “When I saw it was the Riders calling, I couldn’t have been happier”, he said. I was overwhelmed with emotions with how much has gone in to getting to that moment.” Hundeby was asked about the keys to success. “I think taking advantage of every rep and competing every chance I get to show my ability as a football player.”

Novak, a Balgonie product said he was in “total shock and excitement” when he had learned that he had been selected by the Bombers. “Winnipeg is an amazing program”, he said. “Mike O’Shea called and talked about the need for a Canadian linebacker on special teams. I’ll be driving out there and reporting on Monday.” Novak had 41 tackles and a pair of forced fumbles with the Huskies last season. “Mentally, I’ve got to be ready to be at the bottom of the barrel and be willing to grind and work my way up”, he said. “I have to pursue the ball like crazy and refuse to lose 1 on 1’s.”

CFL rookie camps open on Wednesday, May 7th with main camps getting underway on Sunday, May 11th. As has been the case for the past couple of seasons, Saskatchewan Roughrider training camp will take place at Griffiths Stadium.
