A September 19th Ram-Huskie football match-up in Saskatoon has taken on a whole new meaning for the Saskatchewan Huskies following a 21-20 USask loss to the Bisons in Winnipeg on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies were hoping to keep pace with the 3 and 0 U of R Rams but let a 17-0 halftime lead slip away at Princess Auto Stadium. Ryker Frank had a first quarter rushing touchdown and Dawson Lennea had a second quarter touchdown catch to help the visitors to a 17-0 lead at the break.

Manitoba quickly got back into the game with two third quarter scores. Mula Yitna capped off an impressive drive with a 3-yard catch and that was followed by a Nathan Udoh 31-yard grab from quarterback Jackson Tachinski.

Manitoba’s defense stood tall, holding Saskatchewan out of the endzone in the second half and in the fourth quarter overcame a 17-14 deficit as Tachinski hit Vaughn Lloyd on a 12-yard touchdown strike with 13:47 remaining as Manitoba took a 21-17 lead.

Huskie kicker Lukas Scott kicked a 40-yard field goal with 5:33 remaining to make it a 21-20 game. Defenses did tighten up but USask was able to move the ball in the final minute to set up Scott for a game winning field goal, however his 43-yard attempt was wide left.

It was Manitoba’s first win of the season after opening the season with losses to UBC and Calgary. The Huskies fell to 2 and 1 in the Canada West standings, while Regina moved to 3 and 0 with a Friday night 37-20 win over UBC.
