
Huskies overcome 10-point second half deficit
The USask Huskies have regained a share of top spot in the Canada West standings following a 22-20 win over the U of R Rams at Griffiths Stadium on Friday night. .
Fifth year running back Ryker Frank tied a program record with his 30th career touchdown early in the first quarter to give USask an early 7-0 lead. Regina responded when quarterback Noah Pelletier hit Renzel Arinaza to tie the game at 7-7 late in the opening quarter. With the score 10-10 in the final minute of the second quarter, Pelletier connected with receiver Nicholas Sirleaf deep in the endzone to help the visitors to a 17-10 lead at the break.
The Huskies were held to just two third quarter points, but in the fourth struck for their biggest play of the game. Quarterback, Anton Amundrud, connected with Daniel Wiebe on a 60-yard pass and run play with 3:18 left to go to give the home side a 21-20 lead.
Both teams faced some challenges on special teams. Following the Wiebe major, Regina returner Christian Katende fumbled the ensuing kick-off and the Huskies recovered with 3:11 remaining. The Rams did have two drives in the final two and a half minutes of the football game but could not get in to field goal range. USask was able to run out the final 40 seconds of the game for the win.
