Twin hat tricks pace Huskies to blowout win over Spartans

The shooting gallery was back in full effect for the Huskies men’s hockey team on Saturday in Langley, B.C., and this time it was a bloodbath as the Dogs blasted the Trinity Western Spartans 7-0 to sweep the season series between the two teams.

A night after needing 73 shots to outlast the Spartans 5-4 in overtime, the Huskies fired 60 shots on goal and used a five-goal second period to run away with the game. Carter Stebbings and Chantz Petruic each recorded their first career U SPORTS hat tricks and first-year goaltender Bryan Thomson made 34 saves to earn his first career U SPORTS win and shutout in one fell swoop.

“It was a lot of fun. I think that was our most complete game of the season,” Thomson said.

However, it appeared early on that the Huskies might be in for another tight affair as they registered 24 shots in the first period but scored just once when Stebbings put a Raphael Pelletier feed past Spartans netminder Leon Sommer midway through the frame.

But the second period was a different story. The Dogs doubled their lead at the 5:14 mark as Stebbings finished off a shorthanded two-on-one with Dawson Holt. Less than two minutes later, Friday’s overtime hero Connor Roulette buried his second goal in as many nights a split second before the Spartans net was knocked off its pegs. After a brief bit of confusion, the goal stood to make it 3-0.

Two and a half minutes later, Pelletier took a heavy hit in the defensive zone but still managed to spring Petruic on a breakaway and the fifth-year forward made no mistake, pushing the lead to four. Then at the 13:12 mark, Petruic pounced on a Spartans turnover and scored another breakaway goal to make it a 5-0 game.

The Dogs capped the five-goal frame just 46 seconds later as Stebbings completed his hat trick, putting home a backdoor pass from Eric Johnston, who recorded his first career U SPORTS point in his first game as a Huskie. Stebbings now has a team-high six goals on the young campaign, with all six coming in the team’s last three games after he was held off the scoreboard in the season opener.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” the Saskatoon product said of his hot start. “I think my linemates have been a lot of help, lots of chances generating stuff and obviously just getting a little bit of luck. Pucks are going in and I’m finding them in good spots.”

With the game well in hand, the third period was a much tamer affair but Petruic would cap the scoring with a hat trick marker of his own on a Huskies power play, sniping a shot over the shoulder of Cole Savage, who had replaced Sommer following the Dogs’ sixth goal. Petruic’s first trifecta as a Huskie came after recording his ninth career two-goal game in Friday’s win.

Not to be lost in the scoring barrage was the performance of Thomson, who rebounded from a 6-2 loss to Mount Royal in his Huskies debut to slam the door on Trinity Western.

“It feels really good. The guys played unbelievable in front of me and kind of shut it down and took advantage of our opportunities, which made it pretty easy in the d-zone when the play is in the o-zone so much,” he said

The Huskies are now 3-1 to start the season while the loss dropped the Spartans to 0-5-1. Saskatchewan scored once on five power play chances. Trinity Western went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

The Dogs will look to keep their offence rolling when they face the Regina Cougars in a home-and-home series that kicks off on October 24 at Merlis Belsher Place. The game can be heard live on the free HuskieFAN app.
