A first place finish

Huskies host UBC in football semi-final

Oct 25, 2025 | 9:57 PM

Second year Huskie quarterback Jake Farrell has gained some valuable experience in the last three games, which may be vital as the Canada West playoffs get closer. In just his third university start, Farrell threw for 200 yards and leaned on his veterans in a 31-12 win over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday at Griffiths Stadium. The Huskies finish the regular season with a 7 and 1 record and now host UBC on Saturday November 1st at 2:00 PM.

U Sask jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead early in the second quarter thanks to a Ryker Frank five-yard carry and touchdown catches of 11 and 12 yards for graduating receiver Daniel Wiebe. The Huskies are confident that with offensive veterans such as Frank and Wiebe the team can succeed with Farrell in at quarterback despite his small number of starts.

Fourth-year quarterback, Anton Amundrud, has not dressed since September 27th and there is no indication he will be ready to go for Saskatchewan in the post-season. Through five games the Lloydmisnter product was the leading passer in the country, averaging 328.2 yards per game with 14 touchdown tosses and no interceptions. Farrell is averaging 215 yards per game with eight TD passes and three interceptions so far this season.

Saskatchewan also displayed more “connected football” on Saturday afternoon as the defence contributed with some offense. After Manitoba pulled to within 12 points on a De Shawn Le Jour touchdown catch in the third quarter, Saskatchewan’s defense tightened holding the Bisons to no fourth quarter points. The game was put out of reach when Saskatchewan defender Lucas Scheck forced Bison quarterback Cole Anseeuw to fumble the ball late in the final quarter. Scheck ran 74 yards for a defensive touchdown to make it a 31-14 contest.

Anseeuw was in the lineup for fifth year Bison pivot Jackson Tachinski who did not dress. Anseeuw, from Winnipeg, threw for 262 yards and had one touchdown toss. Manitoba fell to 4 and 4 with the loss but took the chance to rest Tachinski and others knowing their playoff destiny. The Bisons will visit the Regina Rams in the other Canada West semi-final on Saturday. The Rams fell to 6 and 2 on Friday afternoon because of a 31-29 loss to the Thunderbirds.

The Huskies defeated 3 and 5 UBC twice during the regular season. During homecoming week Saskatchewan trounced the T-Birds 51-14 in front of close to 10,000 fans at Griffiths Stadium on September 5th. With Farrell in at starting quarterback, Saskatchewan completed the series sweep with a 24-10 victory on the west coast on October 17th.

Saturday’s Thunderbird-Huskie match up can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app with pre-game coverage starting at 1:45 PM.
