With six points in six games the Huskies are off to Manitoba
After splitting a home and home series with the Regina Cougars, the U Sask women’s hockey team makes the trek to Winnipeg for Friday and Saturday game against the University of Manitoba Bisons on the October 31st-November 1st weekend.
U Sask head coach Steve Kook said Friday’s 1-0 overtime win “was as advertised.” Emma Backman made 17 saves for the shutout while Peppi Virtanen scored the overtime winner. It was Virtanen’s first game with the Huskies since the Finland product joined the program. “I think she enjoys the spotlight”, said Kook. “She knows her ability and what she is good at.
Saskatchewan has two wins and six points, six games into the Canada West season. The Bisons, who are going through a time of transition, have just one win in six contests. Jordan Colliton was named Manitoba’s head coach in the off season after spending time as an assistant with the Mount Royal Cougars.
“(Manitoba) is a different squad, with some turnover”, Kook said. “I think the are trying to fight to see what their identity is. They are still a bigger body team. I think is more important on us to focus on us.”
