Dinos visit Merlis Belsher Place this weekend
With momentum on its side, the Huskie women’s hockey team prepares to host the Canada West east division leading Calgary Dinos this weekend. Saskatchewan swept Manitoba with 3-1 and 2-1 (shootout) wins during the October 31-November 1st weekend and sit three points back of Calgary entering this big series at Merlis Belsher Place.
Fifth-year USask forward, Sara Kendall, scored her first two goals of the season in the 3-1, Friday night, win in Winnipeg. “She was getting a little frustrated”, said head coach Steve Kook. “She has had a lot of scoring chances and this weekend they finally all clicked.”
Finnish transfer Peppi Virtanen scored a goal in regulation and a goal in the shootout in the Saturday night contest against Manitoba. “She just scores in overtime, I guess”, joked Kook. Virtanen began her U SPORTS career with an overtime goal against the University of Regina back on October 24th. “She’s settling in and getting connection with her teammates”, Kook said.
The Huskies put a 4-2 and 2 record on the line against a Dino team that has six wins and points in seven of its first ten games. Second-year head coach, Josh Gosling, has changed the make up of the Calgary team according to Kook. “They’ve become a team of transfers”, he said. They’ve turned in to a team with veteran presence and are faster then they have been.”
