Huskies stage fourth quarter rally to defeat the Rams 25-24 for Canada West banner

The previous four meetings between the USask Huskies and Regina Rams had been decided by five points or less. That statistic includes the 2024 edition of the Hardy Cup as the Rams defeated the Huskies 19-14 at Griffiths Stadium. Saskatchewan’s returning players were out to “right a wrong” on Saturday afternoon in the 2025 Hardy Cup at the U of S campus.

Not only did Regina have last season’s experience to lean on, but two veteran quarterbacks who have played in several big games…Owen Sieben and Noah Pelletier. Saskatchewan’s hopes of a Canada West title rested with second year quarterback Jake Farrell who made just his fifth university start in Saturday’s title game.

The Rams put up 17 consecutive points in the second quarter. Kaleb Senz and Emmett Steadman both capped off six play drives with touchdown tosses from Sieben as Regina opened up a 17-9 lead at the half.

Several U of R fans made the trip from Regina and were brought to their feet early in the third quarter when defensive back Brandon Wong scored a touchdown on a 49-yard fumble recovery. The Rams took a commanding 24-9 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Huskies’ first drive of the final quarter started at their nine-yard line. Saskatchewan’s offense started to click as Farrell completed four consecutive passes, and the home team found itself on the Ram 20-yard line. On 2^nd and 10 rookie Liam Piccinin hauled in a Farrell throw to the end zone and Regina’s lead was cut to 24-16.

Saskatchewan’s defense, led by fifth-year linebacker Seth Hundeby seemed to feed off the momentum. Regina’s next drive stalled at the Huskie 36-yard line and Ty Gorniak missed a 43-yard field goal attempt with just under ten minutes left.

Later in the quarter, Saskatchewan’s special teams made a big play. Ram returner Kaleb Senz had the ball stripped by Cam Kaun at the Ram 19 and Jacob Goldstone recovered the fumble. On the very next play, Farrell connected with Mason Grabowski through the air as the Huskies pulled to within two points.

After holding the Rams off the scoreboard on the ensuing drive, the Huskies took possession with four minutes remaining. Receiver Daniel Wiebe made three straight catches at one point as he and veteran running back Ryker Frank were Farrell’s “go to” players. Saskatchewan got to the visiting 18-yard line, setting Lukas Scott up with the winning 25-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining. Scott was 4-for-4 on the day as the Huskies pulled out a 25-24 win.

Farrell finished with 356 yards in passing and two touchdowns. Ryker Frank had 102 yards, rushing. Sieben had 322 yards through the air with two touchdown tosses. Defensively, fourth-year Huskie corner back Carter Stadnyk had an interception.

The Huskies will now face the Queen’s Golden Gaels in the Mitchell Bowl on Saturday at 2:15 PM at Griffiths Stadium. The Gaels defeated Laurier 30-27 in the Yates Cup (the OUA Final) in Waterloo, Ontario on Saturday. The last time the Gaels and Huskies met in a university playoff football game was 1989.
