Bears and Huskies meet for one and only weekend series

Jan 23, 2026 | 7:28 AM

It’s one of western Canada’s best amateur hockey rivalries. The University of Saskatchewan Huskies host the Alberta Golden Bears in January 23rd and 24th contests at Merlis Belsher Place. The Huskies control their destiny as the team pursues a first-place finish in the Canada West, east division. This is the one and only two game series between these two teams this season.

After collecting three of a possible four points against the Mount Royal Mustangs during the January 16-17 weekend, Saskatchewan sits in a second-place tie with MRU with 30 points, four points behind Calgary for top spot. USask also has eight games remaining in the 2025-26 regular season while the Cougars and Dinos each have six.

Huskie goaltender Jordan Kooy made 27 stops in a, wide open, 5-4 overtime loss to Mount Royal on January 16th while newcomer Nolan Maier stopped 30 MRU shots in a 5-3 USask January 17th win. Forward Ethan Regnier had three goals over the two games while Chase Bertholet scored twice in the Saturday victory.

The top team in the east and west division of the Canada West standings get a first round bye in the playoffs, while #2 hosts #3 in the league quarterfinals. The Golden Bears hold a one-point lead over MacEwan for second place in the west division.

Huskie head coach Brandin Cote spoke with HuskieFAN about his team’s effort against Mount Royal, the stretch drive and the weekend series against the Golden Bears.
