The Huskie power play is regaining its form from a season ago as the Canada West playoffs approach. USask rode a pair of first period man advantage goals to a 2-1 win over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place.

Landon Kosior beat Dino goaltender Carl Tetachuk midway through the opening frame, then Dawson Holt scored his second goal in as many nights in the final minute of the period as the Huskies took a quick 2-0 lead. Saskatchewan’s power play is running at over 27% this season.

The Dinos were able to pull within a goal in the late stages of the second period. Logan Hauer notched his fourth of the season with 1:12 remaining to cut Saskatchewan’s lead to 2-1.

Play tightened in the third as the shots on goal were only 6-5 for the Dinos, but the visitors could not get a puck past Nolan Maier in the final frame. Tetachuk came out of the Dino net with 1:24 to go, however the Huskies were able to hold Calgary at bay.

Maier made 29 stops for his sixth win of the season. Tetachuk made 32 saves in the Calgary net. While Saskatchewan went 2-for-3 on the power play, the Dinos were 0-for-1.

USask now sits on top of the Canada West, east division with 40 points, two more than the Mount Royal Cougars. The Huskies visit MRU on February 13th and 14th in a two-game series that may determine which team finishes on top of the division and earns a bye in the first round of the Canada West playoffs.

The third place Dinos have 35 points and can still earn a second-place finish and home ice advantage in the first round of the Canada West playoffs.
