“I blacked out”, joked Huskie third-year forward Keaton Sorenson. That was his reaction when asked about celebrating with his teammates following his overtime winning goal in the Saskatchewan’s 3-2 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears in the second game of the best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place. USask swept the series and now moves on the Canada West semi-finals against the UBC Thunderbirds on the February 27, 28, March 1st weekend.

Sorenson, who scored just once in 16 regular season games, buried the game winning goal at 10:15 on the first overtime period. Bear goaltender Drew Sim made a pad save, but the rebound came Sorenson who was able to lift the puck high into the Golden Bear net. Head coach Brandin Cote was happy to see Sorenson be rewarded for his effort. “It hasn’t really gone as planned for him this year, but he got an opportunity here in the last couple of days. He’s a great player and he stuck with it.”

The Golden Bears overcame a 2-0 deficit to force overtime. Huskie rookie Connor Roulette scored 1:17 into the game to give the home side the early advantage. (Roulette scored 2:01 into Friday’s 5-0 USask win in the series opener.) Josh Pillar notched his first of the series with less than five minutes remaining in the second period to put the Huskies up by a pair of goals.

Alberta started the comeback in the final minute of the middle frame when fourth year forward, Aiden Yakimchuk put a puck past Huskie starter Nolan Maier to make it 2-1. The U of A was dominant in the third period. With time winding down and the Bears on the power play, with Sim out of the net, the Bears were able to tie the game on a Justin Hall marker with 51 seconds remaining.

That set the stage for overtime, where the Huskies dictated play, outshooting the Bears 7-2 in ten minutes of hockey. Minutes before Sorenson’s winning goal, Saskatchewan notched what appeared to be the series clincher, but it was immediately waved off by the officials when they ruled that the net came off the pegs.

“In the playoffs you never know what is going to happen”, said Cote. “We knew (the Golden Bears) were going to play hard. They took it to us at times. The message (going into overtime) was we can’t sit back. In the third period I thought we sat back a little bit. I thought in overtime we pushed.” Maier made 28 stops in the Saskatchewan net for his second win of the series.

The Huskies were 1-1 against the UBC Thunderbirds in the regular season. Saskatchewan pulled out a 3-2 shootout win over the T-Birds on November 28th, UBC responded with a 7-4 victory on November 29th.

The Calgary Dinos will face the Mount Royal Cougars in the other Canada West men’s hockey semi-final. The U of C downed the MacEwan Griffins 4-1 on Saturday night to sweep the best-of-three series.
